Types of solar energy systems
On-grid systems
The solar power plant is connected to your facility’s post-metering grid, which is connected to the operator’s JSC “Sadales Tīkls” network and operates in synchronous mode. The electricity produced is mainly used for your electrical equipment’s own consumption, while the surplus is transferred to the “net” billing system in the network. At any time, if solar production is insufficient, electrical equipment is powered from the public grid. The main components of the system are photovoltaic solar panels and a grid inverter, the parameters of which are coordinated with JSC “Sadales Tīkls”.
These systems can be supplemented with remote reading tools. Installing a grid-connected system allows you to reduce monthly electricity costs, especially if the facility consumes electricity during daylight hours.
Autonomous systems (off-grid)
An autonomous solar power plant is not connected to the public electricity grid. These systems are supplemented with battery cells and a charge controller that monitors the charge and discharge levels of the batteries. During daylight hours, the batteries are charged with solar energy.
The cost of an autonomous system is higher than that of a grid-connected system, as additional components are required. Their operation in the Latvian climate is limited from October to April. However, such systems are suitable if electricity is needed in the summer period in places with high connection costs or without access to the grid, with a consumption of approximately up to 1–3 kW.
Hybrid systems
A hybrid solar power plant combines the functions of a grid and an autonomous system, ensuring more efficient use of electricity. The batteries serve as an emergency power source in the event of a grid outage or as additional power supply when solar energy is insufficient.
The batteries can be charged both from solar panels and from the public grid when needed. However, it should be noted that the service life of batteries is shorter than that of solar panels, and after about 10 years the system may need to be renewed.
